Rodent infestations in your home arise because the habitat and the environment provide them with the key means to survive – Food – Water - Shelter. The rodents may have access to food from unsecured bins, bird feeding or build up of rubbish and the water they need, as well as somewhere dry to live, shelter move around and to breed successfully. The more the availability of these factors is limited - the lower the level of rodent activity that it will support.

EPC can provide a free survey of your home to ascertain if these key elements are available and possibly causing any infestation you may have. One of the objectives of the survey is to identify where the rodents might be feeding, drinking and finding shelter, as well as the routes they were taking to exploit the environment.

We can then suggest an effective Rodent Control programme that will seek firstly to identify those aspects of the environment that are critical in controlling the problem. The programme will then also identify how and where to modify the availability of food, water and shelter, both to assist in control and longer term to ensure that the infestation does not re-establish after control is complete.

Identification and removal of the food and water source is perhaps an obvious step to take here. However, it is not always possible to do this, in which case limiting, as far as is practicable, the access that the rodents have to the food and water through exclusion and proofing will be necessary.

The reduction in Food, Water and Shelter in the environment should be seen not only as an essential part of the programme, but should also be seen as a contributing factor to the safe use of rodenticides and the reduction in environmental risk. The lower the amount of Food, Water and Shelter, the fewer rodents there will be and the lower the levels of the required use of chemical and physical control techniques.

DID YOU KNOW

If you occupy a building you have a responsibility to keep your building free from pests. Under existing legislation the control of rodents is the responsibility of the occupier of the premises in which rodent infestation is evident.

It is recommended that :

  1. Waste food, empty food tins and other waste which might attract rats must be stored in bins with tight fitting lids.
  2. Food for the birds should not be left in any place where rats can have access to it. Such food is often a greater attraction to rats than to birds.
  3. Garden compost heaps should not contain anything likely to attract rats.
  4. The surroundings of your dwelling house must be kept clean, the garden should be free of accumulations of rubbish, hedges should be neatly trimmed and overgrowth of weeds and grass controlled.

In order to prevent infestation of buildings, all outside walls should be rodent-proofed against the entry of rodents. In this regard, attention is directed to:

  1. Openings made for waste pipes, soil pipes, washing machines.
  2. Openings made for electric and telephone cables, and central heating pipes.
  3. Openings made for underfloor ventilation.
  4. The gap between the bottom of an external door and the threshold.
  5. Defective drains and manholes. As a householder you are requested to do your part.
